Kitchen DIY Inspiration

Pinterest

We have been working on the kitchen at the house. Our first makeover room! The kitchen is the heart of the home in my opinion. So, a great place to start! On a tight budget, and not a lot of possibilities... it is a small room. The kitchen is finally coming together until it is complete here is some kitchen inspiration for you!

Polyurethane Wood Counter Tops

Converting our yellow ceramic tile counters into a rustic industrial chic counter top.

We cut the wood to the length of the counter and doubled to meet the depth dimension
and attached the two pieces (1). Lightly sanded, cleaned(2),
 and started the polyurethane process(3).
Applied 1 thin layer with a paint brush. (4)

After letting that dry (about 15 minutes) I applied a really thick coat to the cracks, crevices,
 and around the edges(5).
I let that dry for about 25-30 mins. Then repeated step 4 times 6+.
Make sure to let it dry in between coats. If you see purple/white it is not dry!

As you are adding coats make sure to occasionally add more to cracks, and dips.
We let the counter tops fully dry for 24 hours before putting in the kitchen.
While waiting for that to dry we spray painted the tile with epoxy white appliance spray paint.
( that was a smelly process) But, so far so good the epoxy is not chipping... yet.

Cheap, Cheap Appliances

Five Star Appliances on the Cheap.  How we saved a grand plus on a washer, dryer, and refrigerator...?

After weeks of research: Sears, Costco, Home Depot,  Lowes,  Best Buy, and Online Shops.
We realized that were all of these '+'s  and '-'s to everywhere. We broke down and did table charts, quickest, free shipping, free installation, taxes, etc. Looking at tons of reports on-line. Remember, reviews can be biased but helpful. But, it is worth it to check reviews! Pay for reviews...

We found Best Buy to be the cheapest. After looking at 100s of stainless refrigerators, we could not find one under a 1,000 dollars. Finally, we found one at Best Buy! A beautiful Samsung side door refrigerator- clean, simple, and efficient.

Another, great thing about Best Buy is if you sign-up for their credit card you save 5%  off of final sale.  They also have open box items mark-downs ( this is where you can find a great steal!), free delivery and installation on items $479 +.

We ended up with a Samsung side by side refrigerator, wash, and dryer for 2,200 dollars including all the pipes & hoses. At original cost, without pipes & hoses would have had us at 3,400 dollars.

Check your local Best Buy for your open box items- you can find it on their website.  It can save you ALOT!
